Former World No.1, Maria Sharapova, deemed as one of the biggest players in tennis, announced her retirement back in 2020. The Russian had been struggling with chronic shoulder issues for a few years and shared a goodbye message to her fans and followers with a heavy heart. However, Maria’s fans need not be disappointed as the tennis star is all set to make a comeback to the tennis courts.
Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from professional tennis three years ago at 32 years of age. She has 5 Grand Slam championships under her belt which include one each from the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and two titles at the French Open. A while ago, the tennis legend announced her return to the court on social media.
The Russian revealed that she’ll join former pro John McEnroe in a pickleball battle against Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. The second season of the Pickleball Slam will be played at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Miami, Florida. Sharapova expressed her excitement about the upcoming match as well. “Dare I say I’m getting a little competitive. Slightly nervous and anxious,” the 36-year-old admitted in a short video clip she posted online.
The Pickleball Slam will take place on the 4th of February next year. Sharapova will be up against Steffi Graf and her husband Andre Agassi. The Russian herself will partner with McEnroe. Sharapova asked her followers to tune in and support her team. When the tennis star forgot her team’s name, the camera cut to McEnroe, who put on a cap with “Team Mac” written on it. “Team Mac. The Mac attack is back for Pickleball Slam 2,” he said.
What is a Pickleball Slam?
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America today. The game is played on a comparatively smaller court than tennis and requires the use of plastic balls and paddles. The Pickleball Slam was played last year for a $1 million cash prize. It featured John McEnroe and Michael Chang, who were up against Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.

Recently, the Professional Pickleball Association signed former No.5, Eugenie Bouchard to a tour. The game has sprawled in popularity and some of the high-profile team owners are A-list players. These include Nick Kyrgios, Naomi Osaka, and LeBron James. In a promotional video for the event, Steffi Graf made an appearance, and she had a message for Maria Sharapova and John McEnroe.
“Hey guys, super excited. Hey Maria, hi John. Really looking forward to see you guys. We’re getting ready. We’re working hard, so you’ve got to bring your A-game like Andre said,” Graf said in the short clip.
