Former tennis sensation and Russian icon Maria Sharapova demonstrated her skills on the practice court with celebrity tennis player John McEnroe in a sweet and entertaining video that has gone viral. The clip, which ESPN posted on their YouTube page, is part of McEnroe’s new TV show, ‘McEnroe’s Places’, which delves into the fascinating history of tennis.
During the episode, Sharapova demonstrated her famous groundstroke techniques to McEnroe, emphasizing the importance of grunting, a technique she utilized to great effect throughout her career.
In the video, McEnroe attempts to hit a pole in the center of the tennis court, a challenge that proves difficult for him. As the video progressed, it became evident that McEnroe struggled to hit the mark on multiple occasions. He did, however, decide to attempt the tactic Maria swears by—grunting—with her support. Sharapova’s trademark on-court grunts have always been a distinguishing feature of her game. After several attempts, McEnroe finally managed to hit the pole with the tennis ball, much to the delight of both players.
Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from professional tennis in February 2020, leaving behind a magnificent legacy. Throughout her remarkable career, she dominated the tennis world by winning all four Grand Slams: The Australian Open in 2008, the French Open in 2012 and 2014, Wimbledon in 2004, and the US Open in 2006. Her intense on-court rivalry with former world number one Serena Williams also added another dimension of intrigue to her career.
John McEnroe’s new show on ESPN
Former tennis great John McEnroe has teamed up with ESPN to bring tennis fans a fascinating and educational tour through the sport’s history in the ESPN+ Original series ‘McEnroe’s Places.’ McEnroe and NFL player Peyton Manning investigates the roots of tennis in the first episode, finding its beginnings when kings, notably Henry VIII, enjoyed the game strictly within the boundaries of palaces. In the company of his brother, Patrick McEnroe, John demonstrated how tennis has evolved into a cherished backyard activity accessible to people of all backgrounds.
‘McEnroe’s Places’ will have a stellar cast of tennis legends and significant individuals from the sport. Tracy Austin, Bjorn Borg, Michael Chang, Ross Chastain, Chris Evert, Taylor Fritz, Rod Laver, Gabriela Sabatini, Stan Smith, and Wes Welker are among those who are probably going to appear. These legendary people share personal anecdotes and observations, highlighting the sport’s long-lasting effect and global popularity.
