23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic avoided a scare on Friday as he came back from 2 sets down to defeat his Serbian counterpart Laslo Djere in the third round of the US Open 2023. Djokovic defeated the 31st seed 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete his 8th win from 2 sets down in Grand Slams. In the final set, Djokovic dug deep into the reservoir of his stamina and tired out Djere, who still had great shots and proven stamina, but not enough to pass the 2nd seed.

Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli was among those who were impressed by the Serb’s endurance. Former French pro shared a screenshot of Andy Roddick’s old post praising Djokovic captioned, “First he takes your legs… Then he takes your soul.” Bartoli was in full agreement with Roddick’s assessment of Djokovic’s game style.

“Unbelievable. It’s almost 2 a.m., a large number of people stayed,” 3-time US Open champ Djokovic said addressing the crowd in the on-court interview. With the win Djokovic has kept the hopes of winning a record-extending 24th Grand Slam alive. The second seed will regain the world no.1 ranking from Alcaraz when the US Open ends.

Crediting his opponent for putting on a good display, Djokovic said that it was one of the toughest matches he had played at the US Open in several years.

“I think the message is sent to the rest of the field that obviously I’m still able to play five sets deep at night. Coming from two sets down always sends a strong message to the future opponents,” Djokovic said talking about his comeback win. The 2nd seed went on to say he’d much rather win a match in straight sets than going all the way.

Talking about his opponent, Djokovic remarked, “If he was getting tired, it didn’t take away much from his game to be honest. I think he played better in the fifth than he probably did in the third and fourth because he just started swinging through the ball.”

If the 36-year-old Serb goes on to lift the title next week, he will become the oldest men’s champion in US Open history (Open Era). Djokovic will next meet Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo, who is unbroken so far this tournament.
