With the 2023 WTA Finals already underway the tennis fans from all across the world are prepared and all pumped up rooting for their favorite stars. But in this flock of top eight female tennis stars, stands a player who very few would have hoped to make it to this year-end tournament.

Marketa Vondrousova who shocked the entire tennis world by lifting the Wimbledon Championships is now on her way to face Iga Swiatek in her first group-stage matchup.

Having been placed in the group of death alongside Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur, and the former World No. 1, the Czech star considers herself to be the smallest among the lot. She feels that she has a nice lefthand,d which can be troublesome for some players, and she thereby promises to make it hard for her opponents, starting with Swiatek on Monday.

I feel like I’m the smallest here. I don’t have that much power as other girls maybe. It’s a bit tough sometimes. I was always the smallest so I had to find ways. I feel like my lefty [game] is also a bit annoying for other players. Yeah, that’s what I'm trying to do, just to be annoying also.

Marketa Vondrousova talks about her comeback from season-long injury

Marketa Vondrousova started the year after her season-long injury last year kept her out of the game for quite some time. She was quite consistent with her tennis, having made the comeback, and went right off the mark with a semi-final finish in just her fourth tournament of the 2023 season.

Her major break came at the Wimbledon Championships when she went on to claim the title knocking players such as Svitolina, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Kudermetova, Bouzkova, and Vekic on the way and spoke about it at the WTA Finals pre-match-interview. She said:

I played great tennis before the surgeries, then I had to stop for, like, six months. Then coming back to the top level, it’s never easy. You never know what’s going to happen, how you’re going to play.

While the Wimbledon champion was continuing to impress tennis fans with her impressive doubles performances alongside teammate Katerina Siniakova, she kept producing great form in the singles department as well.
