Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2023, defeating Ons Jabeur in straight sets. Looking at her dominant display, Eurosport analyst and former men’s singles World No. 1 Mats Wilander believes that Vondrousova can “crash the party” at the US Open 2023.
Wilander praised the young Czech’s match temperament, remarking, “Well, I mean, obviously she’s a very, very crafty, great tennis player that didn’t mind the pressure of playing a Wimbledon final.”
Vondrousova had previously come up short at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and the French Open in 2019, losing in the finals. However, she held her nerve against Jabeur at Wimbledon, showing that she has what it takes to win big matches.
He stated that her calm composure on the court during the final came as a surprise owing to her two biggest defeats at big stages prior, where the Czech had trouble controlling her frustration. “(Her composure) was the question that we didn’t know the answer to because she’s obviously lost two big finals, one at the French, one at the Olympics before, but she came in and she was very calm.”
Marketa Vondrousova now has the confidence to do her best at the biggest stages, believes Wilander
Having won a major title, Wilander believes that Marketa Vondrousova will now be a lot better accustomed to the schedules of a Slam title, which usually involves intense matches interspersed with off–days, which can create anxiety within a player.
“I think what this does in Wimbledon is give her that confidence once she gets to another grand slam of playing a match, taking a day off, playing another match, taking another day off and that’s a rhythm that it is not easy to find and accept. I think once you’ve done it, you relish that situation where you have a day off between big matches.”
Wilander believes that Vondrousova’s confidence and form will carry over to the US Open. He believes that hard courts will be a better surface for her than grass. Notably, Vondrousova had reportedly confessed in an interview prior to the tournament that grass is her weakest surface.
Wilander thinks that it will be difficult to predict a winner for US Open 2023. He believes that defending champion Iga Swiatek is the favorite. However, he thinks that Vondrousova, Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina are all contenders. Wilander, and many fans too at this point, think that Vondrousova can certainly “crash the party”.
