Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova got the better of Peyton Stearns in the fourth round of the US Open 2023 to continue her dream Grand Slam run this year. The World No.9 defeated the American 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2 to reach her first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows. The reigning Wimbledon champion has now won 11 straight Grand Slam main draw matches.
“I’m very happy. I actually didn’t expect it. After Wimbledon it was a lot of pressure. I’m feeling good. I’m just trying to enjoy the game. I feel like every match is very tough. We’ll see what happens next,” the Czech No.1 said in the on-court interview after her fourth-round win.
With the win, Vondrousova becomes the first woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to follow up a Wimbledon title with a run to the US Open quarterfinals. The Czech pro struggled with her shoulder injury throughout the game. Vondrousova has withdrawn from the doubles owing to injury issues. Vondrousova blamed the heavier extra-duty balls for the elbow injury that ruled her out of US Open doubles.
Marketa became the first unseeded ladies’ singles Wimbledon champion in the Open Era. Her No. 42 world ranking made her the lowest-ranked Wimbledon champion in the Open Era.

Marketa Vondrousova to face Madison Keys in the Quarterfinal
9th seed Vondrousova reached her third career Grand Slam quarterfinal after avoiding a scare in the 4th round. Awaiting her in the quarterfinals is the American no.3 Madison Keys. The US Open 2017 runner-up got the better of American No.1 Jessica Pegula in straight sets.
Talking about an impressive victory over her good friend, Keys said in the on-court interview, “It’s always tough playing a friend. We’ve been doing it basically our whole lives. When we’re on court it’s all business. When we’re off court, we go back to being friends.”
Vondrousova would be hopeful of shrugging off injury concerns after her fourth-round victory. Concerns about Vondrousova’s fitness were sparked soon after the match when cameras caught her with ice wrapped around her elbow and being comforted by Barbora Strycova, with whom she was scheduled to play doubles later.
