Marketa Vondrousova, the underdog of women’s tennis, just announced her arrival to the world by bagging the 2023 Wimbledon. As expected, this triumph came as a massive surprise for tennis fans, as they did not expect much from Marketa. However, despite being one of the most underestimated players, she has now won the most prestigious tournament. In a recent interview, the tennis professional opened up about some dark times from her past life.
One such incident was when she was struggling and her first agent forced her to buy out his contract. Marketa, who was just 18 years old, was manipulated by her agent into signing a contract that she did not fully understand.
“My parents did sign it because it was a lot of money to put into tennis and they were working so we didn’t have much money for tennis, coaches and stuff. So we had to sign it.” said the 24-year-old Czech player. The contract took over the player’s schedule, and she had to play tournaments when she was not ready. The lack of money forced her to agree to terms that she did not understand, which had a negative impact on her career.
Eventually, Marketa Vondrousova did buy him out for the contract to end, and she is extremely relieved about it. “He pushed me so much about tournaments and everything. So then it was a bit stressful and I couldn’t do what, you know, what I wanted,” said Vondrousova.
New Sensation Marketa Vondrousova recalls her most stressful times under the contract
World No. 1 Marketa Vondrousova stunned the world by defeating Ons Jabeur in two straight sets to win the Wimbledon title. She is the first Czech to win the title since 2011.
Earlier, Vondrousova recalled her stressful moments under her first agent, and she had fallen into a very dark place due to the stress and mental pressure. Since buying him off, she has found her motivation to play tennis and says that it was the best decision of her life. That’s not all, as per the tennis professional herself, she is in control of her career and is feeling a lot better.
Notably, this incident is a gentle reminder to everyone that they should carefully read anything before officially signing on to it. Athletes should be more careful because every other day they are faced with signing a contract. Although there are now many resources to help people in such situations, it is better to understand the contract before signing it.
