Marketa Vondrousova claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, as she defeated Ons Jabeur in the finals in straight sets. The Czech tennis player became the first unseeded woman to win the singles title at the Championships. The former French Open finalist has been marred by injuries over the past couple of years, which has led to her huge dip in rankings.

Marketa Vondrousova’s husband was present in the box during this special moment. The Czech tennis player stated that when she went to her box after winning the final, she could see her husband shedding tears of joy. She revealed that her husband is generally smiling all the time, and it is very rare for her to see him showing emotions.

Marketa Vondrousova stepped up her game in the finals, as she held her nerve during crucial junctures in the match. The 2019 French Open runner-up had been brilliant over the past couple of weeks, defeating the likes of Elina Svitolina and Jessica Pegula on her way to the title.

Marketa Vondrousova jokingly stated that she saw her husband cry after eight years. The last time she saw her husband shed tears was back on their wedding day. “He’s like this all the time (smiling). I think when I came to the box, he cried. I saw him after, and he cried a lot. I think that’s the first emotion I saw him over the eight years (laughter). I think he cried on the wedding day also, but that was it for the eight years, so… That’s it,” she said.

Both players did not serve particularly in the finals, as Ons Jabeur was broken on six occasions. Marketa Vondrousova did a pretty job well there, as she converted six of her seven break-point opportunities. On the other hand, she lost her serve on four occasions.

Ons Jabeur has lost her second successive Wimbledon final, as she was defeated by Elena Rybakina last time around. However, the Tunisian had quite a run at Wimbledon this year, given her struggles in the early part of the year. She was defeated in the second round of the Australian Open by Marketa Vondrousova, as she had a disappointing hard-court season. Given that the US Open is around the corner, the three-time Grand Slam finalist will certainly look to put the disappointment behind her.
