Marketa Vondrousova scripted history, as she became the first unseeded woman to claim the Wimbledon title. The Czech tennis player claimed a straight-sets victory over Ons Jabeur in the final to win her maiden Grand Slam title. The 24-year-old did not have her best season until the Championships, where she completely exceeded all expectations.
In a field consisting of some big names like Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, and many more, Marketa was certainly not expected to go all the way. Whilst winning the title, she also leaped over past champions, Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova, in an exclusive club.
Marketa had claimed just four wins on grass courts prior to her Wimbledon-winning run. This puts her second on the list of women with the fewest wins before they went on to win the Grand Slam. Martina Hingis sits on top of the list, with just three wins to her name.

Marketa Vondrousova enters ‘exclusive club’ after fairytale Wimbledon run
Marketa entered the Wimbledon final as the underdog, given Ons Jabeur’s pedigree on grass courts. However, the Czech tennis player was determined to outplay her opponent, as she really stood out during pressure situations.
Petra Kvitova claimed her first Wimbledon title in 2011 when she just had nine grass-court victories to her name. Venus Williams is arguably one of the greatest grass-court players of all time, as she claimed her first Wimbledon title in 2000. The American again too had just nine victories on this surface before her triumph at the Championships.
Given her recent struggles, this is an incredible achievement for Marketa Vondrousova. She managed to reach the finals of the French Open in 2019, where she was defeated by Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Her performances in the past couple of years have been pretty shaky, given her struggles with injury. However, she will look to carry her current form into the American hard court swing, as the US Open is just around the corner.
