World No. 42 Marketa Vondrousova is the winner of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. Up against the last year’s runner-up Ons Jabeur, the Czech was bidding to become the first unseeded champ at the Grand Slam in the Open Era. She achieved the feat with a 6-4, 6-4 win on a packed Centre Court.
To put things in perspective on how big a feat this is for Marketa, she was having a negative record on grass before this season. Last year, due to her surgery, she was having a cast on her hand. To come from that to winning the title a year later, it’s a remarkable achievement by the player. On top of that, she beat five seeds on her way to the title.
She fought the seeds right from the second round and dropped a set on only two occasions during her run to the finals. She had almost lost against Jessica Pegula being 2-4 down in the third set. Marketa however won the next four games to take down the American in their quarter-final meeting. She was not the favorite in the semi-final meeting against Elina Svitolina as well. She however defeated the Ukrainian super-mom in straight-sets to silence her critics.
Marketa Vondrousova breaks into the Top-10 for the first time in her career
With the win over Ons Jabeur, for the first time in her career, Marketa Vondrousova is in the Top-10. She will be the new number 9 when the rankings are updated on Monday upon the conclusion of the Grand Slam. She was ranked 14th, her highest career ranking achieved in July 2019 having reached the French Open finals that year.
Her career since then was on a downward slope as injuries and poor form caught up with her. The 24-year-old has now however found her best form as she now is the winner of tennis’ most prestigious title.
As for Jabeur, her wait for a maiden Grand Slam title continues. This is her third defeat in a Grand Slam final all that have come in the last year. The World No. 6 will definitely be gutted but her fans can expect her to continue her pursuit of the biggest title that the sport offers.
