Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk is highly disappointed with the way people have moved on from the Russia-Ukraine war while the latter still suffers due to the invasion and bombing. Kostyuk, who has been pretty vocal about the war and has openly refused to play against her Russian counterparts, claimed that not even journalists are bothered about covering the happenings in her country as it won’t fetch them social media views.
After her win in the third round at the 2024 Australian Open against Russian Elina Avanesyan, Kostyuk was asked about the changing perception towards the war-torn Ukraine. Kostyuk was asked how she feels about the fact that there were funds being raised for Ukraine at the 2023 Australian Open, but there is little talk about the same this year.
This question opened the floodgates as Kostyuk went on a rant, slamming anyone and everyone into ignoring the plight of Ukrainians. Kostyuk said that while Ukraine is still at war and there are lives being lost every day, but the world seems to care little, which is really unfortunate.
I respect journalists, but there are some that I really don't like. I think it was a way of not really lightening up the situation in Ukraine, but rather it being like breaking news all the time. So they want the drama. They wanted news. They wanted all this heating between players and everything. The war is still there. People are still dying every day. I still don't understand what all these players are doing here.Marta Kostyuk vented her frustration on journalists.
Marta Kostyuk claims Ukrainians have been in survival mode for last two years
Further talking about the plight of her countrypeople, Marta Kostyuk highlighted how Ukrainians are still in that survival mode, with missiles flying over their heads every second day. The 21-year-old said that the war is far from over but people have moved on which is not good.
Kostyuk talked about the effects of the war on the mental health of her fellow countrypeople. She claims that people are now depressed and tired from this fear of war. The Ukrainian also claimed that while the citizens suffer, no one is doing anything because they are benefitting from it.
We're just in survival mode for the last two years. People are incredibly depressed now and tired. I don't feel like it's stopping anytime soon, and I don't feel like anyone is doing anything about it. I just feel like someone is benefitting big-time out of it, and we're just out here.Marta Kostyuk said.
The 21-year-old said that these tennis tournaments hold little importance for her as real life is outside the tennis courts which people tend to forget about. Kostyuk signed off by thrashing journalists, claiming they are no longer interested in covering the news because there is no drama.
