Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk makes a bold move by promoting gender equality and diversity in tennis. The Ukrainian urges others to hire more female coaches as her mother has had a huge impact on her career. While male coaches also bring in the best out of the players, Marta urges that female coaches can also be as useful and even better for the players.
Marta is currently being coached by Sandra Zaniewska, who is a former tennis player who has been coaching a list of players before and recently joined Marta in her journey. She credits her coach for navigating her game and evolving her as a person. She reveals the hardships she faced with a male coach and states that she feels comfortable with female coaches.
“Usually when I had this kind of behavior, all the other coaches, no one for one second would accept it or try to understand why I feel like this or try and have a conversation with me, or even just let me be. She did and I was like, ‘Wow, this is next-level coaching. I’ve never seen this.’ I’m a person who talks, and it was very difficult for me because when you work with a male coach, most of them don’t talk. They cannot express what you feel and adjust,” said Marta in an interview. (H/T: WTA Tennis)
I’ve been coached by my mom for most of my life, by a woman. I’m very happy and I hope that examples of mine and Sandra will bring more coaches on tour and the girls will trust more women,” she further added.
She has been coached by her mom, who understands her daughter’s strengths and weaknesses. Their close bond was deeper than that of a coach, which gives the player that much more confidence, allowing her to thrive on the court.
Marta Kostyuk creates a huge upset in the China Open
The 2023 China Open is underway and Ukrainian Marta has already made an upset by beating Ons Jabeur in the Round of 32 of the tournament. The Ukrainian started her tournament feeling “hopeless” as she has had a long season of losses and has not won back-to-back matches for a long time.
However, Marta marked her biggest win so far by beating the formidable Ons Jabeur in two straight sets. The Ukrainian was on top of her game, as she aced her opponent a few times and won more breakpoints than her opponent. Her journey, pioneered by her mother’s guidance, showcases the power that female coaches can have on a player’s career.
Marta has understood the value of losses, and she has realized that she spends more time beating herself over losses than working towards them. With her biggest win so far behind her, Marta looks to win the next matches and try to advance.
