Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander has spoken out about the pressure placed on Iga Swiatek to dominate on all surfaces. In an interview with Eurosport, Wilander expressed his belief that it was actually beneficial for Swiatek not to be expected to dominate on all surfaces, allowing her to approach each match with the same level of focus and intensity.
“I think the best thing for Swiatek is to be able to approach every surface, every match in the way that she always has, which is ‘it’s about Iga, but it’s also about my opponent, and I know that I’m one of the best players in the world, but nothing is taken for granted. I’ve got to show up,” he said.
Wilander also acknowledged that Swiatek is still young and developing as a player and that it was important not to place too much pressure on her too soon.”I think when she plays really well, we tend to think about things that are way too big for someone as young as Iga,” he said.
Swiatek burst onto the scene with her impressive victory at the French Open in 2020, becoming the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title. She is a three-time major singles champion, having won the French Open in 2020, 2022, and the US Open in 2022. She is the first player representing Poland to win a major singles title. She has won a total of 12 WTA Tour-level titles.
While expectations are high for the young player, Wilander’s comments serve as a reminder to take a more measured approach to her development and not to place undue pressure on her as she continues to progress in her career.

While acknowledging Swiatek as a great player and champion, Wilander also pointed out certain weaknesses in her mentality and the frustrations that she has shown in some matches.
According to Wilander, Swiatek‘s ability to face and overcome these challenges is what makes her a great player. He also mentioned that there are certain types of players, particularly those who hit the ball hard from both sides and are consistent, that Swiatek needs to watch out for on certain speed-hard courts. Despite these challenges, Wilander believes that Swiatek has a bright future ahead of her and is destined to win many Grand Slam titles.
It will be interesting to see how she performs on the hard courts and whether she can overcome the type of players that Wilander has highlighted as potential obstacles for her.
