“She’s showing certain weaknesses,” Mats Wilander doesn’t believe Iga Swiatek will dominate tennis as Serena Williams did

Mats Wilander believes Iga Swiatek may win Grand Slam titles but cannot match the dominance of Serena Williams

“She’s showing certain weaknesses,” Mats Wilander doesn’t believe Iga Swiatek will dominate tennis as Serena Williams did

Iga and Serena

According to Mats Wilander, Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1 in tennis, may not achieve the same level of dominance as tennis legends such as Serena Williams or Steffi Graf. Wilander cited a particular style of opponent that has been causing Swiatek difficulties. She has been remarkably dominant in the past year or so, although Wilander believes that she will not dominate the sport in the same way that Serena Williams did.

However, comparing any player to Serena Williams is generally unwise since most players are not at her level. Although the best player of all time is a rare occurrence, Swiatek’s dominance last year occasionally resembled the type of dominance Williams exhibited during her career. After dominating the women’s game last year, Swiatek has experienced several losses at the beginning of 2023.

She suffered a heavy defeat to Jessica Pegula at the United Cup, was eliminated in the last 16 of the Australian Open by Elena Rybakina, and then lost to Barbora Krejcikova in the Dubai final last month. Talking about Swiatek to Eurosport Wilander said, “She’s a great player, she’s a great champion, she’s going to win lots of Grand Slams in my book.”

He further added, “But she’s a human. I think that she’s showing certain weaknesses in terms of mentality, certain frustrations, and if she doesn’t show that, she wouldn’t be the player that she is. So I think everything is very healthy for her. It’s just clear there’s a style of player that she will have to look out for on certain speed hard courts, and those players are very consistent and hit the ball very hard from both sides. That’s her worry.”

Iga Swiatek, the current world No.1 and top seed, began her title defense at the Indian Wells Masters with a dominant victory over Claire Liu, defeating her 6-0, 6-1 in the second round on Saturday. Swiatek is scheduled to face 32nd seed Bianca Andreescu in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday. Swiatek has had a successful start to the season, winning 13 out of 16 matches so far, including a straight-set victory at the Qatar Open.

However, she was unable to clinch the title at the Dubai Tennis Championships, losing to Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 6-2 in the final. In the current season, Bianca Andreescu has won 6 out of 11 matches, with her most notable performance being reaching the semifinals of the Thailand Open.

She was the top seed at the Hua Hin tournament, where she secured victories in straight sets against Harriet Dart, Anastasia Zakharova, and Marta Kostyuk to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, she faced Lesia Tsurenko, but was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury after trailing 7-5, 4-0. Fans wish to see her continue the good run as always and win the match.
