Carlos Alcaraz

Mats Wilander, the former tennis player, and Eurosport commentator discussed Carlos Alcaraz‘s recent comeback and subsequent injury. During his analysis, Wilander pointed out the perceived favoritism towards Alcaraz in the upcoming Masters 1,000 tournament in Indian Wells, as well as the pressure he is facing from his hometown of Murcia to regain his number one status.

Additionally, Wilander advised Alcaraz to carefully manage his training sessions and matches in order to avoid further physical setbacks. Despite these challenges, Wilander praised Alcaraz’s playing spirit, which he believes was evident in his recent performances and reminiscent of the form that led him to victory at the US Open in 2022.

According to the Swedish, “I saw all his matches in Argentina and Brazil, and I was afraid that I wouldn’t see the same enthusiasm on the court, but that’s not the case and the public reacted very well. We all have the same feeling that Carlos Alcaraz is the best thing to happen to tennis in a very long time, because of his behavior on the court and his way of playing.”

According to Mats Wilander, Alcaraz’s injury could be attributed to playing a high number of games within a short time frame. As a recommendation, Wilander suggests that Alcaraz should ease up on his training sessions and reduce his participation in clay-court tournaments to prevent further injuries.

Carlos Alcaraz cruises into the third round of Indian Wells Open

Carlos Alcaraz will be playing Tallon Griekspoor in the next round of the tournament. The two players have faced each other three times in the past. In their initial meeting, the Dutch player won in three sets, but Alcaraz managed to come out victorious in the last two matches. Given Alcaraz’s current form and his pursuit of the World No.1 ranking, it will be a challenging task for the Dutch player to defeat a fit and healthy Alcaraz.

Should the Spaniard emerge victorious in the Indian Wells tournament, he would be able to reclaim the top spot in the ATP Rankings on March 20th. This would be his third ATP Masters 1000 title, having previously won in Madrid and Miami last year. Following his historic victory at the US Open last year, where he defeated Casper Ruud and became the youngest player to ever hold the World No.1 ranking in the history of tennis, he will once again be chasing the coveted top spot in the USA.

The absence of Novak Djokovic presents a golden opportunity for the 19-year-old to reclaim the top spot in the rankings. If he wins the ongoing Indian Wells Open, he would earn 1000 ATP points, which would propel him ahead of the Serbian player. Nevertheless, he will still face tough competition from several emerging players who are playing exceptional tennis, including the in-form Daniil Medvedev, who could pose a significant challenge to Alcaraz.
