Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini has finally ended his partnership with long-term coach Vincenzo Santopadre. The 27-year-old, who has been out injured since the 2023 US Open, made his decision public on Saturday. Vincenzo Santopadre coached Berrettini for over 13 years and it was under his guidance that the Italian achieved everything in his career so far, including his career-best rank of World No. 6.

I came into your “tennis arms” not knowing yet what you wanted to do with my life, you managed to make me dream far, but keeping me attached to the single days we lived. Every workout is a brick, every defeat is a lesson and every injury is an opportunity to improve and come back stronger.

The Italian suffered a severe ankle injury in the 2023 US Open during his Round 2 match. He rolled his ankle and had to be taken away from the court. It was earlier feared that he had ruptured his ligament. Although it did not turn out to be that, Berrettini’s injury was pretty serious, and it kept him away from the court for so long.

Even before his injury, Berrettini was suffering from poor form. Thus, ending his relationship with his longtime coach makes sense at some level. People have started holding his girlfriend Melissa Satta accountable for everything wrong with his career and it is high time that he finally starts taking his career seriously.

Despite training at a high level for a few weeks my medical team has advised it would be a risk to compete in the final tournaments of the ATP season. It has been very difficult to accept this but I need to do what is best for next season and my long-term career. I will take this opportunity to reset, re-build and start the year fully fit and healthy.
Berrettini on his recent struggles.

Berrettini was forced to give a walkover in his recent US Open Round of 64 match against Arthur Rinderknech. His performances in the other recently played tournaments were also extremely poor.
