Former World No.6 Matteo Berrettini was forced to retire from the second-round match against Arthur Rinderknech at the US Open. The Italian was wheeled out of the arena on account on account of an ankle injury.

This is not the first injury Berrettini sustained this 2023 season. He had suffered an abdominal injury at Monte-Carlo, which forced him to retire against Holger Rune. Following his road to recovery, the Italian made a comeback at Wimbledon, where he had a promising tournament. However, he was finally knocked out by Carlos Alcaraz, who would later become the champion.

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech moves past an injured Matteo Berrettini to save his spot in the third round of the US Open. When he was leading the Italian by a set, Berrettini rolled his ankle, leaving him unfit to continue the match.

This unfortunate incident pushed Rinderknech to the third round. There, he will be facing World No. 8 Andrey Rublev. The Russian has a plethora of titles under his belt. However, he has never moved past the third round at any Grand Slam.

Rinderknech, however, has seen his best performance in a Grand Slam this year. The US Open 2023 is the first Grand Slam of his career where he has reached the third round.
