Matteo Berrettini has been having a tough time on the court and people are quick to hold his girlfriend responsible. Both Berrettini and his girlfriend Melissa Satta are at the receiving end of a lot of internet abuse. Especially Melissa Satta has been subjected to a lot of online hate.

When the World no. 21 reached the 2021 Wimbledon final, it was like a revelation of a new tennis face to the whole world. Post that, Berrettini was touted to be on his path to greatness, but he faced a lot of hiccups on his way to success. Several injury breaks and not being able to win in the deeper rounds of tournaments left fans wondering. With that, started the blame game and a lot of the blame was directed at Matteo Berrettini prioritizing his relationship with his girlfriend over tennis.

Berrettini has once again spoken against this misdirection of online bullying and holding his relationship responsible for bad form. “At this point in life, seeing a relationship as a distraction for a professional athlete seems disrespectful to me.” said the Italian in an interview to Tennisuptodate. He then drew an analogy for poor performance in journalists (as he was being interviewed by one). “It would be like saying that a journalist writes worse articles because he has a wife and children. It is something that does not make any kind of sense, does it?”

Berrettini withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters in the Round of 16 match against Holger Rune. He won a great match before that against Francisco Cerundolo, but he seemed to have pain in his upper body during the match. Prior to that, he faced first-round exits in both the Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Tennis experts have also tried to analyze the Italian’s underwhelming season. They also believe it is a result of his alleged poor work ethic and prioritizing of his relationship.
