Matteo Berrettini, the Italian tennis sensation, has been struggling to find his form in recent tournaments. The former world No. 6 has failed to reach the semifinals in any of the events he has participated in this year. His best result was a quarterfinal appearance at the Mexican Open, where he had to retire due to an injury while playing against Holger Rune.

Berrettini has now revealed that he has been battling with mental health issues and depression that have affected his performance on the court.“I experienced too many mental & physical tears.. the darkness seems to have no end, it swallows you. Instead of standing still & catching your breath, you dig yourself an abyss… I tried to find myself. The dark gave me space to do it,” Berrettini said.

Berrettini has been absent from most of the tournaments this year. His last appearance was at Wimbledon, where he showed glimpses of his potential by reaching the fourth round. However, he could not sustain his momentum and fell to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets, despite taking the first one.

After a month-long hiatus, Matteo Berrettini is ready to return to the court at the Canadian Open. The Italian star, who made his last appearance Wimbledon Championships in July, will face Gregoire Barrere in his opening match on Monday. Berrettini has yet to make a semifinal appearance this year, but he hopes to change that in Montreal.

His best finishes so far have been the quarter-final finishes at Mexican Open and the Phoenix Challenger, where he lost to Alexander Shevchenko. He also made it to the round of 16 stage on two occasions: at the recently played Wimbledon and at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he missed the match due to injury allowing Holger Rune to advance.
