Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the 2024 Australian Open due to injury concerns. The 27-year-old has issues with his right foot and hence would not be competing at the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. Berrettini was drawn against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round.
However, the Italian won’t be taking part in the tournament any further. Matteo Berrettini has been replaced by Belgian Zizou Bergs. While there was no announcement made from Berrettini’s end, the Australian Open confirmed the news of the 27-year-old getting ruled out on their social media on Sunday.

It is worth mentioning that Berrettini could not participate in Brisbane International over the same injury concerns. However, the Italian participated in the practice sessions in Melbourne. Berrettini recently also joined hands with Rafael Nadal’s former coach and was expected to start the season on a high. But this injury has denied the 27-year-old a chance to start the 2024 season.
Matteo Berrettini’s departure opens doors for Stefanos Tsitsipas
With Matteo Berrettini withdrawn from the 2024 Australian Open, Greek tennis ace Stefanos Tsistipas will be eyeing to make the most of the opportunity in front of him. The 25-year-old will now face World No. 130 in Zizou Bergs.
Tistipas did not have a great 2023 season and would like to make the most of this opportunity to kick off his 2024 season on a high. The Greek made it to the finals at the 2023 Australian Open and would be hoping to repeat the same this time around.
The 25-year-old has started the new season on a decent note, winning one of the two matches played so far. While Tsitsipas won against Steven Diez in the group stage of the United Cup, he lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Nevertheless, considering his record in Down Under, Tsitipas is expected to fare well at the year’s first Grand Slam.
