“Mentally and emotionally heartbreaking,” NFL star Kirk Cousins lauds Andy Murray’s grit and his ability to come back from injury
Andy Murray and Kirk Cousins
Andy Murray has definitely been one of the best players in modern tennis. He was part of the Big 4 which comprised the three maestros of tennis- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. He won 3 majors in his career but after 2016, he was subject to constant injuries which included a career-threatening hip injury.
He came back last year and slowly has risen up the ranks. He had a good grass season this year but couldn’t make past the second round at Wimbledon. This week at Newport, he reached the quarterfinals where he lost to Alexander Bublik in straight sets 5-7,4-6. With this, Murray’s grasscourt season has ended and he will take a couple of weeks off before heading into the North-American swing.
During the tournament, Murray met NFL quarterback Kirk Cousins and had a brief chat with him. The Minnesota Vikings quarterback hailed Murray’s grit and told him: “I admire your grit” when they shook hands.

Later, Cousins went on to praise Murray and described the Brit with various adjectives associated with him- grit, toughness, and the ability to come back from injury. He also emphasized the importance of mental strength in the sport.
“That’s the word that comes to mind when I think of him: his grit, toughness, the ability to come back from injury. Tennis is already mentally [difficult] as a singles player, you’re on your own. Matches can get long, you need to dig deep. It can be mentally and emotionally heartbreaking,” he said.
He added that Murray is an inspirational figure that helps him with what he’s doing. “The way he’s handled not only his career but individual matches, it is inspiring to watch and kind of helps me with what I’m doing,” he said.
