In a shocking turn of events, 16-year-old Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva defeated sixth seed Ons Jabeur in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open.

The Tunisian’s defeat was tinted with some extra humiliation as Mirra Andreeva got a bagel in the first set. It is really shocking to even imagine that a player of Ons Jabeur’s caliber failed to win even a single game in the first set of her match against a 16-year-old.

However, the match that had a dark end had started on a very light note.

As most fans would know, before tennis matches, a coin toss is performed to decide which of the players will serve first and who will take which side.

During the coin toss ahead of the match between Ons Jabeur and Mirra Andreeva, a very peculiar incident took place as the coin, after being tossed, kept on rolling over until hitting one of the ends of the net and coming to a halt. Mirra Andreeva won the toss.

WTA posted a video clip of the same on social media and some fans called it “foreshadowing’, i.e., a warning or indication of a future bad incident.

It is indeed ironic because the events that ensued in the match that followed were equally rare and unpredictable, like the coin toss going haywire.

Andreeva completely demolished Ons Jabeur and won the match 6-0, 6-2. This was her first-ever victory over a top-10 WTA player

Ons Jabeur continues her poor run in the Australian Open

Some great players have poor records in certain tournaments, and the Australian Open has always been that tournament for Ons Jabeur. It is Tunisia’s kryptonite.

Her best performance in the tournament came in 2020 when she reached the quarterfinals. Even last year, she lost to Marketa Vondrousova in just the second round of the Australian Open.

Despite performing phenomenally in the other tournaments, Ons Jabeur has been historically poor at the Australian Open. She has a great record at Wimbledon, for example.

She has reached the final of the tournament for two back-to-back years but has unfortunately not been able to win a Grand Slam yet. She will now like to brush aside this loss and perform well in the upcoming Indian Wells and Miami Open
