The 16-year-old Russian sensation, Mirra Andreeva, is setting the stage on fire with her performances at the Australian Open.
Andreeva secured a win over France’s Diane Parry with scores of 1-6, 6-1, and 7-6. The 16-year-old was down 1-5 in the third set but came back strongly, reeling off five consecutive games in a row. The match went into a tiebreak, and the young prodigy had all the momentum to secure the match.
After the match, Mirra Andreeva was asked in the post-match conference whether she watched the old matches.
Yes, I do watch a lot of matches. I watch the Australian Open when I'm in the room, the night sessions, all this stuff. When there is no tournament, for example on the off-season, I like to watch some old matches. My favorite one is Federer/Nadal in 2017 or 2018 when Federer won the final. I don't know, I like to watch some old tennis, if I can say 'old'.The Russian in turn replied
For the uninitiated, Andreeva was talking about the 2017 Australian Open finals, when Roger Federer won his 18th Grand Slam title against Rafael Nadal. This title win made Federer the oldest player in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title.
Mirra Andreeva continues her dream run in the Australian Open
Andreeva secured an inspiring win over the sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur in the second round of the tournament.
Moreover, she allowed experienced Jabeur just two points in the entire match. Jabeur managed to score 0 points in the first set. With that being said, there is no denying that this speaks to her dominance in the tournament.
The 16-year-old has made a steady run in the Grand Slams since her debut in the French Open last year, where she reached the third round of the prestigious tournament.
Even at Wimbledon, she reached the fourth round. She will be up against Czech ninth-seed Barbora Krejcikova or Australian qualifier Storm Hunter in the next round.
