17-year-old Mirra Andreeva stunned everyone in her first-ever appearance in the Wimbledon Championships by making it to the fourth round. She was close to sealing her spot in the quarterfinals as well, but she couldn’t control her nerves and lost the match against Madison Keys yesterday. She was just two points away from the victory but went on to lose back-to-back points to the American, ending the match in sheer disappointment and giving herself a lot to work on for the future.
Her ongoing form was compared to Maria Sharapova‘s 2004 Wimbledon run when Maria lifted the title by beating World No. 1 Serena Williams. Notably, Sharapova was 17 years old at that time as well. However, after the disappointing loss, Andreeva gave her views on being listed in the same bracket as Anna Kournikova, saying that she is nowhere close to their achievements in the sport.
She added, “Honestly, when Sharapova won Wimbledon, she was 17. I wasn’t born yet (laughs). I didn’t see this historical moment. But it’s amazing what they both have done for tennis.” It is pretty much evident that Andreeva is a huge talent at the center of the sport. Having played so fearlessly at such a prestigious tournament against some of the most formidable players, she is going to have a lot of opportunities to improve her game from here on.
What makes Mirra a huge talent to cherish for the future?
Mirra Andreeva already has a lot of impressive wins in her curriculum vitae. More impressive, she made it to the round of 16 stage of the Madrid Open beating players like Leylah Annie Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Magda Linette on the way. She also made a third-round finish at the French Open beating the likes of Polina Kudermetova, Emiliana Arango, Camila Osorio, Alison Riske-Amritraj, and Diane Parry.
And now, having played one of the absolute best tennis players on the planet in the ongoing Wimbledon Championships, she has beaten 10th seed Barbora Krejcikova and 22nd seed Anastasia Potapova before defeating Chloe Paquet, Tamara Korpatsch, and Wang Xiyu. She has a very strong forehand and an amazing serve technique, making it difficult for even the most experienced players to return.
