In the most stunning result of the day, 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva has defeated Ons Jabeur in the second round of the ongoing 2024 Australian Open. The Russian teenager completely dominated the Tunisian in the match and registered a victory in just two sets. Moreover, it included a bagel in the first set, which is even more shocking.

Mirra Andreeva is currently the 47th-ranked WTA player in the world and ahead of the tournament, nobody had expected her to achieve anything incredible in the 2024 Australian Open. Her performance in 2023 was decent but not good enough for people to expect her to dominate and defeat World No. 6 Ons Jabeur. The youngster defeated Bernarda Pera in the first round of the Grand Slam in straight sets as well. Thus, she has maintained a perfect record in the tournament so far.

Andreeva also featured in the 2024 Brisbane International before heading into the first Grand Slam of the season to get match fit and that apparently helped her a lot. She reached the quarterfinals of the tournament before losing out to Linda Noskova. En route to the quarterfinal, she also defeated Liudmila Samsonova, who featured in the final of the 2023 China Open against Iga Swiatek

Talking about Ons Jabeur, this loss was hands-down a big setback for her. She defeated Ukrainian rising star Yulia Starodubtsewa in the first round without much effort and nobody had expected her to get eliminated in the Australian Open so early.

The Tunisian’s poor record in the first Grand Slam of the year continues. Even last year, she got knocked out of the tournament in the second round itself after losing to Marketa Vondrousova

Mirra Andreeva admits she did not expect to perform so well herself

This was Andreeva’s first-ever victory against a Top 10-ranked WTA player and to do it in this fashion is really remarkable. She revealed that she was really nervous before the match. Thankfully, it did not show in her game against the Tunisian ace, and she completely dominated her opponent.

That’s not true. I was really nervous before the match. I am really inspired by Ons by the way she plays. Before I started to play on WTA tour, I always watched her matches. I was always so inspired by how she plays. Now I had a chance to play her. In the first set I showed amazing tennis. I didn’t expect that from myself
