During her first-round match, Townsend played fabulous tennis to take the match to the third set. However, during one crucial stage of the match, her opponent Lucia Bronzetti claimed that Townsend had touched the net with her racket, but even the umpire denied this, causing a stir online, where the fans were calling them out over bad sportsmanship.

However, Townsend did not say much about this incident but was rather excited to face a familiar face in the next round. While she had faced Mertens multiple times, this was a huge win for the American, who finished the match in straights. Townsend will now face the fourth seed Elena Rybakina on Sunday.
