Former WTA ace Monica Seles was in attendance for the semifinal match between Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk at the 2024 Indian Wells. The nine-time Grand Slam champion came to watch the World No. 1 player, Swiatek take on Ukraine’s Kostyuk on Friday evening. Seles was captured enjoying the match from the stands.

Notably, Swiatek and Kostyuk took on each other on Friday. While Swiatek dominated the Ukrainian and beat her in straight sets, Seles enjoyed the match from the stands.

The video of Monica Seles sitting in the stands and enjoying the match was shared by WTA on social media. The former ace was referred to as ‘Tennis royalty’.

Iga Swiatek thrashes Marta Kostyuk while Monica Seles watches

Talking about the match between Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk, the Polish ace completely blew away her Ukrainian opponent. Swiatek beat Kostyuk in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1. The 2022 Indian Wells Open winner dominated Kostyuk right from the start.

While Kostyuk won one game early in the first set, Swiatek did not allow the Ukrainian to make a comeback and won four games on the trot to take a 5-1 lead. Kostyuk won the next game to stay in the hunt but could not save the eighth game as she could not return the serve with Swiatek leading 40-30.

In the second set, nothing much changes as the Pole won the first point as well as the first game. Although Kostyuk won the second game, Swiatek was in no mood to let her opponent dominate. The Pole raced to a 6-1 win in no time and kept her record of not dropping a set in this year’s tournament intact.

Swiatek will not meet Maria Sakkari in the final. The 21-year-old beat the Greek ace to clinch her first Indian Wells Open title two years back. It is to be seen if Swiatek manages to repeat the same feat or if Sakkari will avenge the defeat from 2022 this time.
