Recently, one of the icons of tennis, Monica Seles , talked about how thrilled she was to watch young Carlos Alcaraz take on Rafael Nadal last season. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is a force to reckon with on the court and the way the young Spaniard handled and maintained himself against one of his fiercest opponents in the semi-final round of the Indian Wells Open 2022, impressed her. However, Rafael Nadal did overcome Carlos Alcaraz in this match to beat him 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Seles keeps herself at lengths from the media limelight. However, she does have a keen observation and keeps herself aware of the changing aspects of tennis, especially when it comes to new emerging stars in both ATP and WTA circuits.

“The way he played in 2022… I had the chance to see him play in person at the Indian Wells tournament against Rafael Nadal and was blown away by his intensity as well as the concentration he showed in such a young age – and he was playing against someone who is probably the most focused player our sport has ever seen, Nadal,” she said.

Monica Seles continued to watch his journey in the US Open 2022. She was amazed to watch the 19-year-old win the last Grand Slam of the season with so much ease and passion and threw light on the same in her recent interview.

And then you know, I followed him through the summer and then when he came to New York to play the US Open, when he went all the way. I mean, it was so impressive for someone to have that mental toughness, that physical toughness in those long games, the last games of the US Open. And he handled it with such ease. As if he was used to this, as if he had done this before,” the former World No. 1 continued.

The nine-time Grand Slam champion in an interview given to WTA acknowledged Naomi Osaka as one of the tennis players who she enjoys watching. She feels that she is one player who is closest to her in the way she plays and moves on the court. She even complimented her for her aggressive style and wished she had it during her playing days.

Of the younger generation, Naomi Osaka is the closest to my game, because she reminds me of me but even better. She’s a very aggressive player and I’m amazed at the way she moves. I like players who are aggressive. I always like to watch these kinds of players. Growing up, I would have liked to play more aggressively, in terms of getting to the net,” she said.

Osaka is currently having a tough time on the court. She played very few matches last season and her performances in the Grand Slams were equally disappointing. This season her fans were hoping that she would make a strong comeback on the courts, however, she decided to withdraw from the Australian Open and the rest of the WTA Tour because of her pregnancy.

She has promised that she will return stronger in 2024. Although there is a string of disappointing performances to her name, many legends including Seles are not afraid of putting their money on her.
