It took another argument between Novak Djokovic and the chair umpire to resurface the evergreen debate. Why don’t clay court use the Hawk-Eye Technology? In the round of 16, Lorenzo Musetti vs Novak Djokovic’s clash stirred this wonderment. In the second set, Musetti hit a long shot which was called in by the Linesman and the chair umpire Aurelie Tourte.

There was a 2 minute long excited discussion between Djokovic and Aurelie over where the ball had left its imprint as it hit the clay. In a hawk-eye replay on the telecast, it showed that the chair umpire was wrong. Although this point was not one of the more crucial points, but it unsettled Djokovic.

On separate occasions, such bad calls from umpires can cost a player the match or championship. In tennis, a lot is riding on a single point for players. Not just winning and losing but also ranking and money earned. So it’s important to ensure no jarring mistakes are made by officials. This is why more and more technology is being adopted across all sports. Thankfully, it was not the case with Novak Djokovic, but it enraged his fans nevertheless. Tennis TV lapped up the incident and made a funny post about it.

Now ATP Monte Carlo chief David Massey has said on record, that despite the Djokovic – Aurelie – Musetti incident they don’t plan to install Hawk-eye. David Massey said, “We are very satisfied with our human linesman”. This has left the audience in splits. Some are ridiculing the decision while some are just completely baffled.

A few people have a few quick suggestions that could help the clay court tournament maintain the rule and also help the players. A fan-made pragmatic suggestion of having 2 broadcast referrals available for each player.

Some of Novak Djokovic’s fans stuck to reprimanding the chair umpire in this entire debacle.

But there are also fans who like the idea of less dependency on technology. One Twitterati who was in minority and loves the added drama with no technology tweets

The Monte Carlo Masters wrapped up just yesterday crowning a new champion Andrey Rublev. Rublev defeated Holger Rune in 3 sets 5-7,6-2.7-5. With clay season in full swing and similar issues existing with other tournaments, this debate is bound to resurface again very soon. For now, one can just hope if there is any mistake made by the umpires, it’s not a costly one.
