Danish player Holger Rune showcased a spectacular comeback in the third round of Wimbledon while his mother, Aneke, paced the streets of Wimbledon, smoking a pack of cigarettes. The tension was apparent as Rune battled Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina tooth and claw, eventually winning the match.

Aneke, who is also Rune’s agent, was unable to handle the strain for the final two hours of the match and chose to leave Court Three, joined by coach Lars Christensen in the short exile. When asked about her decision to leave the court, Rune’s mother told Mail Sport, “He was seeking out a lot. He kept glancing up, and, you know, we’re not the ones playing the game.

Aneke and Christensen left the match temporarily because they were concerned that Rune depended too heavily on their counsel. They said he needed to refocus and rely on his own ability to face the challenges ahead.

Aneke found herself lighting a cigarette with each game won by her son, engaged in her own personal superstition. As per her, every puff seemed to correspond with Rune’s success on the court. As a result, she kept smoking continuously even though she had a parched mouth from smoking.

I was walking up and down the street smoking cigarettes. I was getting superstitious because every time I lit a cigarette, he won a game! My mouth was so dry!” said Aneke.

The match over four hours on Court Three, with Rune winning 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(10-8), advancing him to the fourth round of the event for the first time in his career. The players displayed exceptional talent on the court, which led the match to the final tiebreaker.

Eventually, the tie-breaker reached a crucial 8-8. Fokina attempted to give an underhand serve providing an opportunity to Rune, which he seized. After all these extreme emotions, Rune emerged victorious. Later on, he described it as the ‘most enjoyable match he has ever played’.
