Carlos Alcaraz has once again proven his doubters wrong by beating the inform Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open. The Spanish teenager thwarted a dominant Tsitsipas to win the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to progress through to the semifinals.
It was a match filled with talking points and drama but Alcaraz lived up to the expectations of his fans as he held his nerves and also had the home support to beat the Monte Carlo Masters champion and the title contender in Barcelona. It has to be one of the best wins in his short career.
The 18-year-old started very strongly as he was buoyed by a double break to wrap up the first set. However, he need to settle down a bit after the Greek came out all guns blazing in the second set. But he showed great maturity and composure to finish the third set and win the match to progress to the last four. This win means that Alcaraz has now broken into the top 10 ATP rankings.
“Probably my biggest win on clay court. It was unbelievable,” said Alcaraz, who will crack the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time on Monday. “Unbelievable game that I played, unbelievable atmosphere that I lived today on court. It was unbelievable everything. The atmosphere here, the crowd, the level that I played, the level of the match. It was incredible.”

Alcaraz is gradually developing a great head to head record against Stefanos Tsitsipas as he has won all of the three matches against the Greek. Tsitsipas is a great player, especially on clay and to defeat him like this speaks a lot about Alcaraz’s credentials. The youngster was in his element with his on court movement, excellent strokeplay and brilliant display of calmness even during crunch situations, therefore he deserves to go through to the finals in Barcelona.
Alcaraz left the court ahead of the third set for a comfort break and returned with a rejuvenated focus. He shared how he threw everything that happened in the second set out of his mind and came back knowing that he had to give his best to win the game. “I went to the bathroom just to turn off my mind, just trying to change what I played at the end of the second set, just to be focussed on the third set,” he explained. “Forget everything in the match and just give 100 per cent in the third set.”
The Spaniard will now face Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who has also been a surprise entry in the semifinals of the Barcelona Open. He defeated the fourth seed Cameron Norie to set up a semifinal clash against the Spaniard. However, after the win against Tsitsipas, Alcaraz was brimming with confidence as he believe snow that he can challenge for the title in front of his home fans. “I think I beat the favourite,” he said of his win over the World No. 5. “I’m playing an incredible level. And I think that I’m ready to get the title.”
