Naomi Osaka has had her struggles with deciding on doing what is right and wrong for her, especially in terms of her tennis career. However, the multiple-time Grand Slam champion is one who has always bravely expressed what she feels, including revealing her mental illness on social media herself, and taking tough decisions such as not talking to the press which once led to her having to pull out from the French Open!

The American tennis star, who has roots in Japan, recently attended a business panel discussion called Metamorphosis where she disclosed her plans to launch her own media company with NBA legend LeBron James. During the conversation, Osaka emphasized how she is always extra-willing to take up projects that seem challenging on the outside.

“For me, I’ve wanted to test new waters. I’m a very challenging person, like the harder something seems, the more I want to attempt to do it,” Osaka said during the talk.

She also pointed out that the fact that there weren’t enough female athletes in big business ventures also prompted her to take this step. “Just seeing that there aren’t many female athletes to do such a thing. Say someone’s already paved that way then I’m kind of like okay someone’s already there,” Osaka added.

Osaka recently revealed her relationship with late NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Kobe was killed in a helicopter crash along with his young daughter Gianna Bryant. Osaka was also featured in a story in GQ’s Modern Love issue with her boyfriend Cordae, where she talked about her and Kobe’s friendship in detail.

The tennis star said, “I would say he was like the older brother/uncle that I wish I always had. He was someone that, no matter how busy he was, for some reason he always picked up the phone when I called him. And I remember once, after the [2019] U.S. Open, I called him after one of my matches and he was just hanging out with his youngest daughter. He’s someone that gave me advice.”

After Kobe passed away, Naomi wrote a heartfelt letter to her close buddy, which she tweeted. It read, “Hey… I don’t really know what to do so I’m writing you this letter. Thank you for being you. Thank you for inspiring people everywhere, you have no idea how many hearts you’ve touched. Thank you for being so humble and not acting as big as you are.. Thank you for caring and checking up on me after my hard losses.” She concluded, “Thank you for randomly texting me ‘You ok?’, cause you know how f***** up my head is sometimes. Thank you for teaching me so much in the short time I’ve been lucky enough to have known you. Thank you for existing. You will forever be my big bro/mentor/inspiration. Love you.”

If the venture with LeBron works out, Osaka will follow the likes of Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, who are also female tennis athletes hugely invested across multiple spheres of business.
