Naomi Osaka eager for a ‘brilliant comeback’ as she picks the Brisbane International 2024 to start her campaign

Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka admitted her eagerness for a comeback as she chose the Brisbane International to start her season. Osaka had withdrawn from the tour at the Australian Open 2023. On account of her pregnancy, she had taken a break from the sport. However, she revealed that she hoped to make a comeback during the 2024 season.

The 26-year-old had not played on the tour since September of last year. However, it was not until the Australian Open 2023 that she officially withdrew from the tour. This was shortly followed by a pregnancy announcement from her. Osaka gave birth to a baby girl in July 2023. Since then, she has been seen getting back to the court and practising for the upcoming season. She also ensured that she will definitely be participating in the Australian Open 2024.

The Women’s Tennis Association(WTA) announced on their website that the former US Open champion will be making a return a little before the Australian Open. She is set to take part in the Brisbane International 2024 which will take place from 31 December 2023 to 7 January 2024. This stint will be good practice for her Australian Open campaign and the rest of the Australian leg of the tour. She said:

I am really excited about getting back out on court and competing. I always love starting my season in Brisbane and can't wait to return.

The Japanese tennis player was on a roll before her hiatus. Her last big title was at the Australian Open 2021. The four-time Grand Slam champion will hope to recreate that campaign in the 2024 edition of the tournament. While it might take a while before she gets back into her pristine form, she has definitely started the necessary training to do so. Her Brisbane campaign will be the first step for her to re-establish her tennis career.

The former World No. 1 said:

I've always tried to come from a place of my culture, like being half Japanese and half Haitian and growing up in America. Hana Kuma on that sense, kind of sees things from my sense. 

Osaka is the founder of Hana Kuma, a media company. The company aims to highlight the wonders of Haiti.

She also revealed that the struggles in tennis and business are two completely different things. Playing tennis is like ‘breathing air’ said Osaka on account of her playing the sport from a really young age. However, business ventures are something new to her. She revealed that she always has something to learn in the field.
