Naomi Osaka’s return to the tennis court is not going as the fans would have ideally expected. However, the Japanese is herself aware of the fact that she will obviously not get to her best form overnight after coming out of a year-long break. Thus, she is playing in as many tournaments as she can to get in form. The tournament that she is currently playing in is the 2024 Doha Open.
Osaka has been handed a tough draw in the tournament, as she faces Caroline Garcia in the first round. However, upon being asked about it, the four-time Grand Slam winner said that she does not believe in unlucky draws, as at the end of the day, the best player deserves to win.
Moreover, she always goes into matches with a win-or-learn mentality. However, she will be facing her for the second time in quick succession, as they also met in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open. There, the French player had defeated her with ease.
No, in all honesty, I have never believed in, like, unlucky draws. I have always felt like whoever is the better player deserves to win at the end of the day. For me, I almost feel better if I play tougher opponents, because I think, like, I learn more from the matches. So of course it's kind of funny to hear that I'm playing her again, but I'm a little happy.Osaka via Doha Press
The former World No. 1 Japanese player praised Garcia and said that they have the same birthdays and, hence, the same horoscopes. The Japanese hilariously added that irrespective of the result, it is certain that a Libra is going to win the match.
Like, she's always been a really nice person, and I know I'm not supposed to think that about my opponent, but I know we also share the same birthday (smiling). At the end of the day, a Libra is going to win.
Naomi Osaka praises Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff for improving their game
Talking about her current form, Osaka said that she has so far played in only four tournaments and one of them was a Slam. Thus, her disappointing form is not a major concern yet, as she would ideally have to play some more tournaments to get there, considering the fact that there are so many quality players out there now.
Of course it was like that when I left, as well, but I think just watching the top players play like Iga, Sabalenka, of course, Coco, and just seeing them kind of grow into their games was really inspiring for me. It made me really want to play them.
After the Australian Open, Naomi Osaka lost in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open as well. She is expected to shift her focus to Indian Wells and the Miami Open once the Doha Open ends.
