Naomi Osaka declared in January that she was pregnant and is expecting her first child and won’t be in action till 2024. She even withdrew from the Australian Open 2023 and announced her pregnancy three days after that.
After the news spread like wildfire, certain critics started to emerge. Their worries and questions about halting her career also started popping up. Osaka did not remain silent and resorted to social media to voice her feelings. She touched upon the gender prejudice that female athletes endure during pregnancy or after having a kid. However, the critics are quite calm and do not react in this manner to male athletes who have children.
Naomi Osaka tweeted, “Btw to the people that are suddenly concerned about my career- There are plenty of male athletes with kids that are significantly less accomplished, you might wanna worry about them instead. Thanks for the concern, might wanna redirect it to someone that needs it though,”.
She then clarified that she did not intend to make this into a male-versus-female discussion. However, it is clear that many people do not comprehend that even the best athletes have a personal life. Instead of focusing just on tennis, they must live, grow, and devote time to their families.
Naomi’s true admirers have been sympathetic, congratulating her and wishing her well. They want her to return happy and better than before. Naomi also stated her want for her child to see her play and be proud of her.
