It has been a shameful few days for the Napoli Cup organizers and ATP. Both the tennis fans and the players are furious over the quality of the material that has been used to design the court. However, the controversy does not end there.

The players also complained about the way the tournament was planned and the accommodation and logistics problems they had to face. Nicolas Barrientos even saw his and his wife’s luggage, stuff, and belongings being thrown out of his hotel room into the lobby. All this while he was busy playing his match.

Players threatened to withdraw from the tournament before it even started because they arrived to discover courts covered in dents and scuff marks. Then, qualifying matches were moved off-site to allow organizers to demolish and rebuild the courts all through the course of the weekend.

However, because of the humidity, the courts were slick, and Corentin Moutet withdrew from his match against Miomir Kecmanovic after just eight games, informing the umpire that the court is a relative hazard to play on. Similarly, the match between Pablo Carreno Busta and Fabio Fognini was then called off due to the risk that the court poses.

Meanwhile, ATP Napoli Cup organizer Cosimo Napolitano, in a long statement defended the organizational planning of the event. In a very crude remark, he called the critics ‘ imbeciles’ while praising the kind of effort he and his team put in the attempt to make the event a grand success.

“Because what happened in the first two days caused everything else to cascade. But again: we worked like crazy to immediately find solutions that allowed us to hold the tournament here in Naples. The ATP could have taken the tournament elsewhere. Anyone who makes a controversy on social media is an imbecile. It’s easy to get confused, without knowing the work behind it. I’m here, I put my face to it and answer everyone,” he said in a statement given to an Italian news publication Ubitennis

Professional men’s tennis players got a new tournament to showcase their skills and talent on the ATP tour. This will be the 21st time this tournament shall be organized. It will begin in earnest at Napoli in Italy.

The Napoli Cup is one of the few tournaments which got an upgrade from an ATP Challenger event to an ATP 250 tournament. This decision to include the event in the ATP calendar year was taken due to the difficult situation in China due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, it appears doubtful that the competition would be held next year in the same capacity.
