“Never thought someone could tread the grass of the center before the reigning champion” Novak Djokovic furious with this change in Wimbledon’s tradition
Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic is in the sumptuous form at Wimbledon 2022. He was only challenged in the opening round of Wimbledon by Soonwoo Kwon as the South Korean took a set off him. After his first-round match, he has been much more clinical wiping out Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round and compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round in straight sets. Djokovic will play his fourth-round match against a surprise grass-court sensation Tim van Rijthoven.
Rijthoven got the wildcard to play in his home event of Libema Open and went to defeat Taylor Fritz, and Felix Auger Aliassime to reach the final. He completely decimated world number 1, Daniil Medvedev in the final to win his first ATP title and he has continued his stunning form to set up a fourth-round clash with Novak Djokovic, something he had wished coming into the Wimbledon main draw as a wildcard. The match on Sunday will mark the first time the tradition being changed that Wimbledon’s Sundays are off.
Novak Djokovic believes that defending champion should be the first player to enter the center court.
After his win against Kecmanovic, In the post-match press conference, Djokovic was asked about the change in Wimbledon traditions and his feeling toward these modifications. Djokovic was okay with the change of playing the matches on Sunday but he was extremely disappointed by the fact that the center court had been opened for someone before the defending champion. He said:
“I’m happy that Wimbledon changed that rule and that we are now playing that day. It’s quite amazing how they change the rules, when this is a very traditional event. I think it’s good that they’re open to certain innovations. Today the wearing of white and the absence of advertising are very rare things for example especially in the world in which we live. What I do not accept is the possibility of training on Centre Court before the start of the tournament. I never thought anyone could tread the grass before the defending champion.”
