“Next season I will be more motivated,” Iga Swiatek reflects back on the lessons she learned from her Wimbledon loss

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, has excelled this season. Only two of the ten competitions she has competed in this season have resulted in her failing to get past the semifinals. Prior to losing to Alize Cornet in the third round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, she had won 37 consecutive matches. She arrived at the All-England Club without having played any Tour matches on grass due to a shoulder issue.

Despite this, Swiatek has a 48-4 record for the year. With the resumption of the hard court season, Swiatek will likely resume her previous level of dominance prior to the start of the clay season. The Pole will return to action at the ATP 250 clay event in Warsaw beginning next week.

Iga Swiatek announced that she will be playing in Warsaw next week. She announced this at a press conference where she talked about her dominance this year, rest as well as her plans for the rest of the season.

On being asked about her mindset before playing in Warsaw, “I’m very motivated. I didn’t have many opportunities to play in Warsaw. The last time I was here was a few years ago. It will be a big challenge and a lot of stress for me because it’s not so easy to perform at the home tournament. I know that people will support me with applause and in general, the atmosphere will be wonderful, but for me the most important thing will be what is happening on the court. I hope to play well.”

She spoke at length about playing at Wimbledon and the subsequent rest, “Of course, I’m glad I played there. But I know that next season I will be more motivated. This year we didn’t have much time to get used to the grass surface, I had to learn to play differently. But I would also like to have little time to prepare for the herbal series next year, which will mean my successful performance at Roland Garros,” he said.

“I’ve been training for a week, so I’ve already forgotten about my vacation. But the week-long pause after Roland Garros and after Wimbledon showed itself positive. It was a great solution to avoid injury,” he said.

On being asked about her goals for the upcoming season, the world no. 1 said that “We’re not even talking about them. The situation I’m in is new to my whole team. Let’s see how I play in hard tournaments. People will probably have expectations that I will start winning everything again.” She signed off by saying that she wants to “continue to focus on enjoying tennis and not paying attention to what is said around me and focusing on the next match, not the result.”
