Nick Kyrgios, who has made a name for himself with his direct and blunt comments, was at it again, this time taking aim at compatriot Alexei Popyrin. This was accompanied with a cheeky dig aimed at the lower-ranked players on the ATP Tour. Following the Aussie star’s sarcastic tweet mocking lower-ranked players, fans were quick to lash out at the maverick for his cheesy comments.
The 28-year-old Wimbledon 2022 runner-up has never been a fan of clay courts, and has in the past too voiced his concerns over what he feels are an overdose of clay court tournaments. No wonder then that Nick has not featured in the French Open since 2017.
Taking to Twitter, as he usually does to express strong opinions, Kyrgios lampooned his compatriot Alexei Popyrin for competing in a clay-court tournament, in which he was supposedly not aware of the names of some of the other participants.
A seemingly innocuous tweet by a user highlighting the summary of events at the Croatia Open held in Umag caught the fiery Aussie’s attention as he tweeted, “Who are some of these players haha.”
For context, the Croatia Open is an ATP 250-level clay-court tournament played annually in Umag, Croatia.
Fans fire salvos at Nick Kyrgios for his distasteful comments
The Twitterverse was unwilling to spare Kyrgios for his uncharitable remark making light of lower-ranked ATP players, and they reacted sharply with sarcastic and caustic comments of their own.
Labeling the Australian as “cocky,” one fan took exception to Nick’s comments by suggesting that the Aussie has the gall to comment on such matters without actually winning an ATP Masters’ 1000 event. Admonishing Kyrgios and asking him to be more respectful to his opponents, the fan was clearly not in a forgiving mood. Here are some more Twitter reactions from angry fans:
Fans were equally surprised at Nick Kyrgios’ taunting directed at his own friend and fellow Aussie, Alexei Popyrin. The 23-year-old has made it to the semifinals of the Croatia Open, where he is scheduled to meet Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
Recuperating from an injury layoff, it would certainly be prudent for Kyrgios to focus on his recovery and return to tennis action, rather than engage in meaningless banter on social media. He did enjoy a fine run in the second half of 2022, and the tennis world is eagerly awaiting to witness the mercurial Aussie’s dynamism on the court.
