Nick Kyrgios talks about his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is out of the Tour currently but not away from headlines. The 27-year-old’s relationship with his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi remains in the news in one way or another. This time in a talk, he explained how Hatzi plays a crucial role in his professional life helping him turn around his career.

The last season of Kyrgios was the most successful one yet. He reached the final of Wimbledon against Novak Djokovic which was the biggest highlight of 2022. And unlike other players on the tour, it came without having a coach or mentor. Kyrgios believes the positive influence of Hatzi is sufficient to achieve his goals.

“I think last year like obviously I’ve got a girlfriend now who I see long term, there are a lot more things that I’m trying to create and I’ve had a lot more business opportunities as well from the last year,” Kyrgios told Logan Paul in his podcast Impaulsive.

Talking about the success of the last year, Kyrgios acknowledges the role of his girlfriend. “I think she definitely played a part in it. I don’t think I listen to her but I feel like she gave me confidence. Just things like that, just being present at times and saying like ‘you’ve got the talent here, you can go this far’ when I’ve lost a bit of belief in myself,” former World No. 13 explained.

World No. 19 Nick Kyrgios has played a major part of his career without a coach or mentor. The reason for that is his erratic nature as cited by Kyrgios himself. He explains how he is not like the other players on the tour and he did not want to put someone in a tough position.

“I think last year was the best year of my career, big time. And I always knew that if I really put my mind to it. I did everything last year without a coach as well, I still feel like I could take it to that next level of professionalism but I can’t look like that,” Kyrgios said.

“I wouldn’t want to put them through that. Some days I just don’t feel like playing. They can’t. I’ve had coaches before and it’s been okay,” he further added. Kyrgios is currently recovering from the knee surgery he underwent earlier and is yet to get the 2023 season underway.
