Nick Kyrgios admits money is the reason he plays doubles along with singles

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios reached his maiden singles major final at the Wimbledon Championship after receiving a walkover in the semi-finals but lost to Novak Djokovic in 4-sets who clinched his 7th Wimbledon title and 4th consecutive title. He has had a phenomenal year with his consistent performances on the Tour and winning his 7th ATP singles title at the Citi Open.

Kyrgios advanced into the semi-finals of the Japan Open along with his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis defeating the Spaniard pair Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Pedro Martinez in the quarter-final clash in straight sets 7-5,6-4. Kyrgios during his post-match interview opened up on the reason to play doubles and how it helps him to relieve the stress of playing in singles which becomes tiring sometimes for him.

Kyrgios said that “Tennis can be so stressful in singles. Sometimes it’s hell. You have to make an exhausting effort for a long time to stay serious and focused, you have a very big responsibility on the pitch. This is why playing doubles with Thanasi reconciles me to this sport, it offers its playful side. I want to perform in both because I’m here to make money, that’s my job and that’s why I play both.

The Aussie has been riding on a high with being a consistent player on the Tour and slowly making his mark. But the main big concern for him has been the in-court behavior that lands him in trouble quite a few times and has been fined often for it.
