Nick Kyrgios has arguably been one of the biggest underachievers in tennis. The Aussie star has reached only one Grand Slam final through the course of his career. Kyrgios was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the final of 2022 Wimbledon championship. The Australian player has struggled with injuries this year and has played only one competitive game. In order to recover from his injury, Kyrgios pulled out of this month’s US Open as well.

Kyrgios has asked his fans to show patience and gave them reasons to be optimistic. The 28-year-old shared an Instagram story captioned, “To my millions of fans out there, I guess we just have to be patient. Trust me, I still have some fire left in the tank, my body just needs time to recover and get back. I’m still as motivated as ever, in the gym, treatment, recovery. Everything off court is doing great. I am eyeing to come back and have a season like my last again.”

After the US Open, Nick Kyrgios will be ranked around No. 470, as he will have only 90 points in the ATP Rankings. Kyrgios isn’t really troubled by his poor ranking though, reacting to the news Kyrgios tweeted, “Yes that’s what happens when you have injuries. I also have a protected ranking of 21 and will get wildcards wherever I want. GREAT UPDATE!”

Kyrgios won his first Grand Slam doubles title last year at his home Grand Slam, the Australian Open. Kyrgios partnered with his Australian counterpart Thanasi Kokkinakis. With a straight sets win in the final, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis became the first wildcard pairing in the Open era to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title. As a result, Kyrgios moved to the top 40 in the doubles rankings on 31 January 2022, rising 219 spots.

As previously mentioned, Kyrgios ended the 2022 season, ranked No. 22 in singles and No. 13 in doubles. In response to a tweet shared by a user, which mentioned the top 50 players in both singles and doubles this year, Kyrgios asked why the stat wasn’t shared for the last year.

The Australian also questioned the need for Australian women’s soccer to get a statue in recognition of their performance at the women’s world cup. Appreciating the team for their performance, Kyrgios said that getting a statue for a fourth place finish was absurd.
