Australian World No.25 Nick Kyrgios gave his opinion about the Lyon Open controversy in which Swedish World No.53 Mikael Ymer was disqualified from the tournament for physically assaulting the umpire. The crazy scenes happened during Ymer’s match-up against Arthur Fils in the second round. The disqualification happened in the first set when the score was 6-5 in favor of Fils.

According to Nick Kyrgios, the umpire was wrong, and he was supposed to come down from the stands to assure that the ball hit the mark. As he commented over the Instagram post, “Typical Umpire not doing their job correctly. All he has to do was just check the mark, regardless.”

The tennis world is split over the controversy. While some argued that Ymer had no respect for the Umpire others were of the view that the Umpire had the minimum courtesy to come down from the stands and show the mark of the ball. Kyrgios had a view of the latter as he has spoken up.

After a successful 2022 where he won his first Grand Slam title, in doubles, in the Australian Open, and reached the finals of Wimbledon in singles, the Australian World No.25 is yet to play a single match this year. The comeback tournament is not yet announced but the tennis world is expecting him to be back for the grass season with a potential peak at Wimbledon. With a strong service game, he will be fancying his chances there.

After a positive knee surgery at the start of the year, the Australian has said that he is not in a hurry to be back for the tour. Hence his girlfriend’s wish of going to Paris with him will not be fulfilled this year as Kyrgios is not playing in the French Open this year.

As per Kyrgios, “Currently taking it day by day with my knee and building up the load. Trying to get back to where I was. The surgery was a great success. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome of it. Now we will be pushing ahead for a speedy recovery and are aiming to see everyone at Indian Wells.”
