Nick Kyrgios has always been known as an aggressive player on the court and for his controversial statements off court. The Australian has never held himself back from speaking his mind due to which he has also been labeled as ‘rude’ many times. This year again, he was in the news for his outspoken demeanor. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he firmly asserted that if not for him, no one else can beat Novak Djokovic in the upcoming Wimbledon.

The Aussie has faced the Serb many times on the court, including last year’s Wimbledon finals, where he lost to the former World No. 1 after winning a set. This was also the first major event where Kyrgios performed until the finals. One would believe that this rivalry will sustain even off-court but that has not been the case. The Aussie and the Serb have come rather close to each other since their last major face-off.

This could be supported by the engagements they both have been holding on social media. A few days ago, Djokovic posted a video on his Instagram account where he was eating the grass on the court. This is the symbolic action that the Serb has been performing since several years after winning the Wimbledon. The video indicated Djokovic’s hope and visualization of winning this year on the grass court again.

Responding to Djokovic’s post, Kyrgios playfully remarked, “Please don’t eat the grass in front of me again. But if you win again, I’m taking you for some drinks this time.” This lighthearted comment is a clear indication that, despite their intense rivalry, the two players have formed an unlikely friendship in recent times. The Australian tennis star’s comment reflects a shift in their dynamic, suggesting that while Kyrgios still aims to defeat Djokovic on the grass courts, he now acknowledges the Serbian’s dominance at the prestigious tournament.

As the tennis world eagerly anticipates the upcoming Wimbledon tournament, all eyes are on the potential clash between Australian star Nick Kyrgios and Serbian powerhouse Novak Djokovic. With their history of memorable encounters on the grass courts of Wimbledon, fans are hopeful for another thrilling showdown between the two players.

But things have been not so good for the Australian. Even though he has claimed that he is the only person who can defeat the Serb, his performance this year says something else. The 28-year-old athlete had been hoping to make a successful comeback on the ATP Tour after missing the entirety of the 2023 season due to knee surgery and subsequent recovery. Unfortunately, Kyrgios’ return to competitive play did not go as planned. In his first match back at the 2023 Stuttgart Open, it was evident that he was far from his best, ultimately losing to Chinese player Yibing Wu.

Following his defeat, Kyrgios appealed to his fans for patience. However, his condition did not improve, leading to his withdrawal from the subsequent 2023 Halle Open. Eventually, he withdrew from Mallorca as well. This decision was made to allow for further recovery ahead of the prestigious Wimbledon tournament. Having played only one match this season, Kyrgios faces a significant challenge in preparing adequately for the third Grand Slam event of the year.
