Nick Kyrgios lashed out at American tennis veteran Jimmy Arias for downplaying his injury hiatus and mocking him for his absence from the tour. In a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Arias spoke of Nick, referring to his claim of the tennis season being too hectic for the players, as bogus.

Arias said, “I don’t know what he’s talking about when he says this schedule is out of control. He’s played one match this year. He seems to take every other year off, so he should be able to play for another 25 years.”

He claimed that Nick’s injuries are an excuse for him to not play for some time. Arias took a further jibe at his struggles, saying, “As we’re talking right now, I don’t know (if) he’s gonna play five more matches (this year). He’s played once so far this year. I’m not sure (hi) wrist, knee or his tattoo is hurting him too much (from playing) Pokemon maybe. I don’t know.”

Nick decided to retort against Arias’ comments in a tweet. He mocked the former World No. 5’s status as a commentator, “@ariastennis you got some sort of issue? Although I had no idea who you were before my mate messaged me 10 mins ago, I’d appreciate if you kept my name out of your mouth to keep you relevant… well at least to give you some form of credibility.”

Nick further belittled Arias’ career achievements, claiming that they came during a weaker era of tennis. “Lol 5 titles and slam semifinal. That’s cute, at least have a better career then someone before you criticize them,” he wrote in another tweet.

Kyrgios further downplays other ‘horrible takes’ by Arias

During his interview, Arias also made another bold statement that didn’t sit well with fans, including Kyrgios. He said that women’s singles World No. 1 Iga Swiatek’s arrival onto the tennis scene has not done the sport any good. Arias said, “I don’t think she’s (Iga) been great for women’s tennis because she wears her hat so low that you can’t even see her face or eyes during the match, so you don’t get a connection as much as you could… I want to see her personality.”

Kyrgios tweeted, calling his statement yet “another horrible take.” His opinion reflected that of most others on Twitter.

Arias was not all abuses about Kyrgios during his interview. He mentioned that Kyrgios is a great asset for tennis so long as he is playing. However, many fans who tuned in to the interview held the opinion that mocking a player for his/her injury status is simply not fair, and it gets even more ridiculous coming from a former seasoned player like Jimmy Arias.

However, it remains true that Kyrgios’ 2023 season is not anywhere close to his career-best 2022 season. It remains to be seen when the mercurial tennis player will finally return to being a mainstay on the tennis tour.
