The Citi Open in Washington, D.C., crowned its champions on Sunday, with Dan Evans and Coco Gauff winning the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively. But while both players celebrated their achievements on the court, a controversy emerged off it. However, the issue of the whole scenario was that at the end of the day, both players didn’t receive the same monetary amount for their wins. A fan pointed it out on social media, and Nick Kyrgios replied, which sparked a fire on Twitter.
Both Evans and Gauff played the same number of matches at the same venue, with the same format of best-of-three sets. Yet, Evans earned $353,445 for his run, while Gauff received only $120,150, less than half of what the British player got. Kyrgios, however, dismissed the fan’s argument and defended the difference in pay.
Kyrgios responded to a fan who claimed that men’s tennis is more popular and profitable than women’s tennis by bringing up the example of the 2023 Wimbledon tournament. He wrote, “What about slams? Do we do This breakdown then? Vondrousova made more than Novak that week.”
He implied that Marketa Vondrousova, the Czech player who won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon, earned more money than Novak Djokovic, the Serbian legend who lost in the men’s final to Carlos Alcaraz.
Twitter slams Nick Kyrgios for his comments on prize money

However, his tweet did not go down well with some fans who pointed out that Vondrousova had won her first Grand Slam title while Djokovic had fallen short of the trophy. The aggressive response from the fans suggested that the claims made by Kyrgios were baseless and that he should not have done that.
Here are some of the reactions from Twitter:
Nick Kyrgios, who is known for his outspoken and controversial comments on social media, may have to rethink his stance on the pay gap issue. The comparison didn’t seem right, and it’s certain that the Aussie will try to come up with an explanation.
He has again drawn himself into a brawl with the fans, and it will be a spicy conversation. Besides a contest in Stuttgart, Kyrgios has been absent from the tour all year. Can he recover and play the second half of the season?
