Nick Kyrgios has been away from the court for a long time now. He has played only four matches since the 2022 US Open, and his career has been plagued by injuries lately.
The Australian missed the 2023 Australian Open due to arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He made his comeback shortly in Stuttgart but it was short-lived as a torn ligament in his right wrist forced him to be sidelined again.
Recently, he has been on several podcasts and interviews and is also a part of Eurosport’s commentary team for the 2024 Australian Open, which he was supposed to participate in initially.
The Australian had always been a controversial figure in the tennis world for his outspoken nature and some of the stuff he said in these podcasts indeed created some stirs among the fans.
However, an important detail that he revealed about his own life in the ‘Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson’ podcast was that he was a big-time basketball player as a kid.
Kyrgios said that at a certain point in his life, he had to choose between the two sports and ultimately decided that pursuing a tennis career would be better.
Until the age of 14, I trained and regularly put the ball in the basket, and then my father told me that I was done with basketball and that I should devote all my energy to tennis. That broke my heart. He said to Mike Tyson.
Recently, in an interview with the Naomi Osaka-owned media company ‘Hana Kuma’, Nick Kyrgios chose basketball over tennis in a ‘this or that’ kind of segment.
This shows that his love for the sport is immense. For those who are unaware, Kyrgios has been a Boston Celtics fan since childhood.
Nick Kyrgios says he would have dealt with Novak Djokovic’s heckler himself
Novak Djokovic having altercations with members of the crowd is not a rare sight. During his second-round match of the 2024 Australian Open against Max Purcell, a few fans tried to heckle the Serbian, and he challenged one of them to come down the court and say things to his face.
Nick Kyrgios, who is a part of Eurosport’s commentary panel, had an interesting reaction to the incident.
If you want me to jump into the crowd and sort him out, I’ll do it for you bro. I got your back 100%.He told Djokovic while talking to him virtually after the match.
The Serb responded by saying that he would keep that in mind in the future.
Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios faced each other in the final of the 2022 Wimbledon final and have been very good friends since then. Both players are pretty well known for being aggressive on the court.
