Australian tennis professional Nick Kyrgios just had one of the best seasons of his career in 2022. The 27-year-old made it to the final of the Wimbledon Championships this year and earlier in January won the Australian Open doubles pairing up with Thanasi Kokkinakis. Other than his on-court performances, Kyrgios remained in the headlines due to some of his comments on social media platforms this year.
On Friday, Kyrgios responded to the former tennis player and now commentator Rennae Stubbs’ criticism of tennis players investing in a pickleball franchise. The former doubles World No. 1 was making it clear that she would never invest in a pickleball franchise and would never watch the sport on television.
“Just to let everyone know, I will NOT be investing in a Pickleball franchise & will never turn a tv on to watch Pickleball. I would rather watch pain dry. Why all these tennis players think Pickleball is worth investing in & not the game that made them all the $$$ is beyond me,” Stubbs wrote on Twitter.
Kyrgios was quick to counter Stubbs’ criticism. “lol I think LEBRON JAMES & KEVIN DURANT have a bit more of an idea f what to invest in,” Kyrgios replied. The conversation between the two did not stop here as Stubbs further tweeted,” Also let’s go ask Brady, Naomi etc about FTX. But ok!, referring to the recent meltdown of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
Nick Kyrgios’ 2022 season, off-court controversies
Australian star Nick Kyrgios had some great returns in the 2022 seasons. He advanced to the final of the Wimbledon Championships where he eventually lost to the Serbian great Novak Djokovic in 4 sets. He achieved a Grand Slam doubles success with Thanasi Kokkinakis in the Australian Open earlier in January.
For the first time in his career, he made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open facing off against Russian player Karen Khachanov, the match went on for five sets with Khachanov’s victory. Thanks to the quarterfinal showing, Kyrgios moved back in into the top 20 of the rankings.
Kyrgios had to face some criticism because of his behavior on and off the court. In the semifinal match of Wimbledon this year, he had some fiery exchanges with his Greek opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas. After losing the prestigious Newcombe Medal to Ashleigh Barty, he made some filthy remarks against Tennis Australia that drew heavy criticism online. Kyrgios is set to compete in the Australian Open next year as he confirmed to the Eurosport earlier.
