Nick Kyrgios is the Ultimate ‘Bad Boy’ of tennis. The Aussie feels the media has played its role in painting him as the ‘Villain’ of the sport. Kyrgios never fails to take a dig at the media and the supposed unfair treatment he feels he is subjected to. This time Kyrgios called out the X account ‘The Tennis Letter’ for its tweet on the World No. 8 Russian Andrey Rublev.

Rublev was knocked out of the Cincinnati Masters by the Finnish professional Emil Ruusuvuori in a marathon 3-setter. In a rollercoaster match that lasted over three hours, Rublev was overcome by emotions in the third set. Rublev, who was clearly struggling throughout the match, hit 64 unforced errors. But the Russian lost control of his emotions at 4-3, 40-30 in the third set when he sat on his chair and sunk his head into his hand.

Tears poured out of his eyes as the Russian struggled to find his game. This isn’t the first time that Rublev had an emotional out-pour on the court as he cried at the change of ends in his match against Frances Tiafoe in the US Open last year, too.

While most tennis fans sympathized with the Russian on social media, Kyrgios wasn’t particularly sympathetic towards Rublev. Commenting on X, Kyrgios called out the double standards applied by the media towards him and other players. Making a cheeky remark on social media, Kyrgios wrote, “Funny for some it’s ‘raw’ & ‘showing emotions.”

Kyrgios has had a tough 2023 season having played only one match. The Aussie has withdrawn from several tournaments owing to injury issues. Kyrgios withdrew from the Australian Open due to a knee injury. Recently, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist withdrew from the US Open owing to yet another injury setback.

Talking about his decision to withdraw from the US Open, Kyrgios said, “Heartbroken about the US Open. I will be back…. my wrist is not ready yet to compete. But may I remind people I have a protected ranking of 21. When I choose to be back I’ll be back.” The Aussie has dropped several points in the ranking as he has not been able to defend his points this season. But Kyrgios apparently isn’t worried about his ranking.

Due to injury, Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from Laver Cup Vancouver 2023 as well. The Aussie would hope that he can recover in time for the start of next year. Lleyton Hewitt was the last Australian to win a men’s singles Grand Slam title back in 2003. Nick Kyrgios would love to be the one to break the drought and cement his status as an Aussie Legend.
