After a long time of pondering the thought, Nick Kyrgios has finally decided to become a vegetarian. However, the reason for him turning into a ‘vegan’ is not health but the concern for wild animals. Every year, bush fires in Australia burn down millions of trees. As a result of that, millions of animals lose their habitats. Many also lost their lives.

In a blog post, the Australian Open 2022 doubles champion talked about his passion for animal welfare and what inspired him to make this important change in his lifestyle. The title of the blog post was ‘The Koala photo that broke my heart‘. He is also trying to motivate people to donate to the animal rescue organization.

“I tried a vegan diet a couple of years ago but with all the travel I do, it was hard to stick to it. Since then I’ve managed to make it work, and I’ve been vegetarian for quite a while. That’s not for my health, I just don’t believe in eating animals,” he continued.

He is also championing animal protection causes. He has decided to donate $200 for each ace that he plays.

“We’ve already lost more than half a billion precious Australian animals – this tragedy ain’t going to stop anytime soon. Seeing the footage of these animals suffering with the fires only reinforces why I’ve chosen this diet. When I see these terrible photos, I can’t comprehend eating meat,” he added further giving reasons for change in diet as reported by the British newspaper The Daily Mail.

Nick Kyrgios along with Venus Williams and Marcus Daniell joins a number of athletes who have adopted a vegan diet.

Many doubts arose about Nick Kyrgios’ participation in the Australian Open 2023 when suddenly he decided to withdraw from the United Cup 2023 citing an ankle injury. He also decided to withdraw from the Adelaide International 2 tournament.

However, his manager Daniel Horsfall, confirmed the 27-year-old’s participation in the first Grand Slam of the year.

“We are very excited and working every day to make sure we’re ready for the Australian Open. A lot of people were upset after he pulled out of the United Cup, but I hope they now realise the injury is genuine. I wish more people would ask questions before putting in their two cents,”  he informed.

The World No.22 will play an exhibition match, dubbed as ‘The Arena Showdown’ against Novak Djokovic before the start of the tournament. The two will be playing against each other for the first time after their memorable Wimbledon 2022 final. This match will be played at Melbourne Park on January 13.

Nick Kyrgios is also the Australian Open doubles champion. He paired up with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis and won the tournament. This time, the pair will try to defend their title.

“We’ll be playing at Aussie (Australian Open). Doubles is a lot less taxing on the body and mentally it’s a bit easier as well.Obviously singles is our priority but I think it would be rude not to go out there and have fun with it,” Thanasi Kokkinakis said in an interaction with mediapersons.

Nick Kyrgios’ participation will give another reason for Australian tennis fans to flock to the stadium during the Australian Open.
